FAQ

Which Mexican institutions offers fellowships to foreign students?

There are in Mexico several institutions offering fellowships for foreign students (European included): CONACYT, S.R.E., S.E.P, UNAM and bilateral science and technology programmes of cooperation that provide opportunities to carry out research fellowships in high quality Mexican research institutions.

If you want to get more information on the Mexican scholarship system please read the “Report on Mexican Research funds programs opened to European participation and guidelines on participation” elaborated within the Access2MexCyT project. You can find the document by clicking here

CONACYT is the institution in charge of coordinating almost all the government efforts to support science, technology and innovation initiatives, and is in charge of accompanying and stimulating the consolidation of Mexican programmes for graduate and postgraduate studies. With this purpose, CONACYT established a National Graduate and Postgraduate Quality Studies Programme (Programa Nacional de Posgrados de Calidad – PNPC) which offers the framework of continuous evaluation of the Mexican curricula (or academic programmes) and promotes, above all, high quality scholarships.

Where can I find such research institutions or universities offering fellowships?

You can find a list of all those Mexican institutions offering fellowships to foreign students in our Mexican Research Directory at the Access2MexCyT project homepage that you can find here

Once there, you may search per institution category (CONACYT centres, public or private universities or R&D Mexican institutes) or you may use the advanced search (per name, speciality or description).

Does the directory contain information on the postgraduate programmes?

In this directory you can find the most relevant information on the institutions with a brief description of the mission and research fields and activities as well as the contact data and the website. At the bottom of the page a link to access the information on the postgraduate programmes offered by the institutions can be found, so you can find this relevant information easily.

How can I get a fellowship from CONACYT?

First of all it is necessary to consult if the postgraduate programme of your choice is included in the list of the National Graduate and Postgraduate Quality Studies Programme (PNCP) which offers the framework for continuous evaluation of the Mexican curricula (or academic programmes) and promotes, above all, high-quality scholarships. To read more about the PNCP click here

Important Notice: In order to be eligible for a scholarship from CONACyT, the programme of your choice should be included in the PNCP. Only the students enrolled in one of these programmes, national or foreign, may request for a scholarship from CONACyT.

Once you have chosen a postgraduate programme and you are sure that it is included in the PNPC list, you must consult directly the website of the institution offering the programme.

You can also make your search the other way round. You can choose a programme directly on the PNPC first (where you can see which institution is offering the programme) and then go to the Mexican Research Directory and search for the institution.

Where do I apply for a fellowship, by CONACYT or by the chosen institution?

The institutions where you are planning to realize your postgraduate studies are responsible for processing the fellowship by CONACyT.

Once the institution has carried out the academic selection process of candidates and determined the priority of grant applications, it will be responsible for carrying out the formalities on behalf of its prospective beneficiaries for fellowships to CONACyT.

You can see all the information on the requirements and selecting criteria here.

I heard that the Ministry of public education offers scholarships for Europeans

The Ministry of public education (Secretaría de Educación Pública - SEP) also developed a programme of scholarships intended for foreign students (European included), wishing to achieve Master and Doctorate studies in Mexico in the frame of excellence curricula and at an international level.

Master and Doctorate studies of 16 Mexican institutions are on the SEP’s list of Programas de Calidad y Competencia Internacional en México.

These scholarships are subject to previous enrolment at a Mexican academic institution on the list mentioned above. The SEP’s General Direction of Foreign Affairs evaluates and selects the applications while the assignment of supports is in function of the available resources for this programme.

You can see all the information on the requirements and selecting criteria here.

What about the UNAM scholarships and programmes?
